Math
This year Brandon used Math-U-See for geometry. We have both been very pleased with this course, and I definitely have a much clearer understanding of geometry than I did before. Yes, even the proofs!
Grammar
Brandon used Easy Grammar Plus as his grammar text this year. Over the last few years, the Easy Grammar series has helped him to develop a solid foundation in grammar, usage, and mechanics.
Writing
Brandon used Winning with Writing for writing instruction and practice this year. This curriculum has helped him learn to use the steps of outlining, writing rough drafts, and completing a good final copy. However, writing is still one of his least favorite subjects.
Literature
This year Brandon used School of Tomorrow Literature PACEs. The PACEs are easily used independently, but do not contain literary analysis or in-depth study of the books.
Vocabulary
Brandon used Working with Words this year for vocabulary practice. This inexpensive workbook contained an excellent selection of practical vocabulary words and was a good fit for him.
Social Studies
Brandon used School of Tomorrow World History PACEs this year, and honestly, they weren’t an overwhelming success. Yes, he completed the material, but I doubt he’ll remember much that he read this year. I know I don’t remember much at all–and I spent many hours studying with him.
Science
This year Brandon studied the Apologia biology course. Although Devin loves School of Tomorrow Science PACEs, Brandon much prefers the writing style and experiments included in the Apologia course. He has done quite well with biology, and he plans to continue with Apologia next year for chemistry.
Health
Brandon completed the School of Tomorrow Health Elective PACEs this year. As with the world history PACEs, he didn’t particularly enjoy the health PACEs, but hopefully he learned enough to improve his awareness of first aid and health issues.
Physical Education
While Brandon does not participate in organized sports, he has continued to be extremely active. We have encouraged him to pursue personal physical fitness through both individual and group activities.
I’d love to hear what you’ve used successfully for tenth grade!
