One of my goals as a homeschool mom is to bring history to life for my children. After all, reading dry textbooks and completing boring assignments is not usually an effective way to develop a love of history.

Yes, we do use a history textbook or curriculum as a spine, but I love to add in plenty of interesting reading and other learning opportunities.

My favorite living history resources:

  • Historical fiction
  • Biographies
  • Documentary videos
  • Audio dramas
  • Timelines
  • Field trips to historical sites

We are currently listening to a fascinating historical audio drama that meets all my criteria for bringing history to life—a fabulous addition to any homeschool history curriculum!

About The Dragon and the Raven Audio Drama

We have been listening to The Dragon and the Raven audio drama. My 13-year-old son, Collin, has especially enjoyed it. In fact, he took it to his room one night and listened to the entire thing before he fell asleep!

This audio is a dramatization of G.A. Henty’s book of the same title. (Get a FREE Kindle copy!) Mr. Henty was known for his rich historical fiction that emphasized good Christian character traits.

A brief overview (adapted from Henty’s book):

The Danes have swept over every kingdom in England, laying waste to everything in their path. Join Edmund and the one man who is willing to stand against the invaders – the young King Alfred of Wessex. From standing in the shield-wall to sailing on the whale-road, Alfred and Edmund realize the nation’s only hope is to turn back to the God they have abandoned. Can the two young warriors turn the tide of the war and save their world?

Collin found The Dragon and the Raven to be very engaging and exciting. I am confident that he learned much more about King Alfred and the Danish invasion from this Heirloom Audio audio drama than he ever would have learned from a brief mention in a textbook.

In typical teenage fashion, Collin doesn’t say a whole lot about things, but he did say he was interested in getting more of these historical audio dramas. High praise coming from a teen!
