Most homeschool moms of larger families have experienced seasons of overload at one time or another. Juggling multiple grade levels and a wide range of subject material can be exhausting for even the most seasoned homeschool mom.
Online homeschool classes can help lift the load for mom while also providing an excellent learning experience for students. Our family has participated in two CurrClick Live classes, and we have experienced the benefits of online learning firsthand.
How Online Classes Benefit Homeschool Students
1. Interaction in a classroom environment
Most homeschool students have little to no classroom experience. My own children have never had the opportunity to sit in a live classroom, but online classes allow them to interact with the teacher and fellow students in a similar way.
The CurrClick interface provides an ideal online learning environment. The instructor is always visible in the upper left corner via live video feed. The center of the screen functions as a whiteboard, slide show, or demonstration area. The right column contains the chat box, enabling the students to ask questions, respond to the teacher, and work together as teams.
I love that CurrClick’s online classes encourage my children to answer questions and participate in activities with their classmates. And even better, the kids are enjoying it!
2. Experience working with a teacher other than mom
Since beginning homeschooling eight years ago, I have been my children’s only teacher. In fact, the younger ones have never had any other teacher than me. It’s vitally important that students be able to adapt to various personalities and teaching methods before they head off to college.
Taking online classes helps my homeschooled children to develop confidence in interacting with a teacher. They also benefit from taking responsibility and learning independently without direct help from me.
3. Opportunity to practice note-taking skills
I really shouldn’t be surprised that my children are stymied by note-taking. After all, my goal is to provide one-on-one instruction to each child–they have never needed to take notes. Online instruction provides a reason for students to practice note-taking, a valuable skill that will serve them well throughout their entire life.
4. Experience with homework assignments
Homeschoolers rarely have a homework assignment–after all, they’re already at home! Taking responsibility for completing homework assignments without the direct supervision of the instructor is a helpful discipline, especially as students enter the higher grades.
5. Learning a subject from a knowledgeable source
We all have subjects that we are not able to teach as effectively as an expert would. Foreign language? I’m completely inept. Geometry? Well, I can do it, but I don’t enjoy it.
I was surprised to find that CurrClick offers many high school courses: Spanish, literature, American history, government, and more! There are also plenty of choices for elementary students, such as Little Sprouts Spanish, Apologia astronomy, and Saxon 5/4.
6. Convenience and flexibility
Online homeschool classes are available in the comfort of home. This is a tremendous benefit to me as a mom of seven–no more bundling up the little ones to take the older children to class!
In addition, CurrClick’s live classes are recorded and can be watched later. If we miss a class due to appointments or sickness, we can easily watch it the next day or whenever it is convenient.
Using CurrClick Live Online Homeschool Classes
CurrClick Live uses Adobe Connect software to present the online classes. The interface is very user-friendly, even for new users. Take a look at this brief video tour:
