The Homeschool Mother's Journal

In my life this week…

After a very busy Monday, most of my family left for ten days at our church camp. Kendra and I opted to stay home for a few extra days, but we’ll be leaving this afternoon to catch up with the rest of the family.

Places we’re going and people we’re seeing…

Unfortunately, we got to have a visit with an appliance repairman this week.  On Sunday morning, we discovered that the dishwasher wouldn’t even turn on–and in this house, the dishwasher is just about as necessary as it gets! So the repairman was scheduled to come Tuesday.

While he was working on the dishwasher, he turned to me and said that something was wrong with the fan on the refrigerator. You guessed it–we decided to have him check the refrigerator next. While he was still working on the frig, we remembered that the washer sounded like it was going to quit at any moment, so Mr. Repairman worked on that, too.

Thankfully, the dishwasher was under warranty, the refrigerator was a very minor repair for which the repairman did not even charge us . . . and the washer was successfully repaired for less than {gulp} $200.

Things I’m working on…

I’m busy tying up loose ends for our first day of homeschool on August 28. I’m excited that I was able to design my own timeline notebook pages for Keaton to use with his Mystery of History lessons! (Anyone else using MOH this year?) And I’m still needing to get everything ready for IEW’s writing lessons for all five kids.

I’m praying for…

… my family, and the special services at our church camp.

Questions/thoughts I have…

Do you use a timeline notebook? I’m curious as to whether you prefer a horizontal or vertical format–please share!

  1. Well, I have to say “places we’re going and people we’re seeing” – really not fun at all! LOL At least he caught the some problems before you had to make due with out!

We use a time line and I definitely prefer the horizontal view. I just like how it reads – I feel like I can really see where things are placed in time better!

Hope you have a great week this week!

    • Thanks for your input on the timeline book, Meg! The horizontal view is definitely less cramped. (Do you happen to have a post about your timeline notebook?)

  2. We have a broken dishwasher right now. We have just been washing the dishes by hand. Ultimately, I’d like a new dishwasher, so I really don’t want to put money in to repairing it. Washing by hand is getting a little old though, and it takes time! Glad you got everything fixed!

  3. Well, at least the repairman got everything done in one visit, right? And the bills wasn’t so bad!

We’re using a wall timeline with pictures this year for SOTW. We tried a VERTICAL notebook timeline in the past, but the kids weren’t into it. ::sigh:: Best laid plans! ::wink::

    • Jessy, I thought a wall timeline would be a great way for everyone to benefit from Keaton’s MOH lessons, but he strongly preferred a notebook timeline. I’m still considering a wall timeline–for myself, if no one else is interested, LOL!

  4. We love our huge wall timeline – I think for us, we’d have trouble doing horizontal, despite its space-friendliness, because we’re “write on the lines” people. So, unless we did a special notebook of our own, we’d have to go against the grain.

As I type this, I realize I sound a little bit insane.

    :)

    • Joan, *I* wanted a wall timeline, but Keaton preferred a notebook timeline, LOL! I did finally decide to go with the horizontal layout because of the space advantages, so I ended up designing my own lined timeline pages. And no, I don’t think you sound insane–that comment made me smile! :-)

  5. Thankfully it sounds like most of your major appliances should be good for a while…

We are just starting a timeline this year. I’ll be taking a peek at yours every so often to get ideas…

  6. Glad you got all of your appliances taken care of before school starts! =o)

  7. Thankful you got all of your repairs taken care of. When it rains it pours, goes the old saying. Hope you guys have a great time at camp.
