You may also want to take a look at what we’re using next year for third grade and sixth grade. I’d love to hear what you’ve chosen to use, as well!

Good stuff! What kinds of topics does Kaylee enjoy reading about? I do like books!
Hi, Joan! Kaylee loves anything to do with horses. She has also read most of the Amish-related books in our local library. You’ve got a girl–what would you suggest?
I’m guessing she’s already read “The Yearling” and “Black Beauty,” but they were longtime favorites of mine! I also liked the “Anne of Green Gables” series, and of course the “Little House” books. I read a lot of Amish-based fiction too and those series set in a much simpler time I think appeal to me for the same reason!
She has not read “The Yearling” yet, so that’s a great choice. She already mentioned the Anne of Green Gables series, so I think we’ll go ahead with that as well. Thanks so much for your suggestions!
I love the Sonlight literature selection from their catalog. Sometimes I mix and match the ‘grade levels’ because some can be a little over their heads.
This year for my 8th grader we’ll be reading ” To Kill A Mockingbird” and “Lord of the Flies”.
I know “Where the Red Fern Grows” is a good one. You can get the book and the movie to compare and contrast. “Island of the Blue Dolphin” is another good one.
If she likes Horses,” Flicka ” , and “Black Beauty” are good stories.
I appreciate these recommendations, Tracy! I can’t believe I didn’t think of checking the Sonlight literature lists! And I hadn’t thought of “Flicka,” either. Thanks so much!
She probably has read these by now, but I LOVED all the Marguerite Henry horse books…King of the Wind, the Misty of Chincoteague series, etc… And some non-horse, historical favorites… The Bronze Bow (Time of Jesus), The Golden Goblet (Ancient Egypt), The Witch of Blackbird Pond (which is not about a witch, really! – Colonial America), The Sign of the Beaver (Westward Expansion), Gay-Neck: the Story of a Pigeon (WWI)… Have fun! There are so many great ones out there!
