Our Homeschool Curriculum: Grade 8 {2011-2012}

8th grade homeschool curriculum

Math

After trying many different math programs (something I never thought *I* would do!), we finally decided to try Math-U-See. Although I doubt that Devin would consider math to be his favorite subject, he is definitely gaining confidence and building math skills this year.

Grammar

This year Devin is using Daily Grams (Jr/Sr High) for keeping his grammar skills fresh. He has an excellent foundation in grammar, usage, and mechanics, having used the Easy Grammar series for several years.

Writing

Devin is using Winning with Writing for writing instruction and practice this year. This curriculum has helped him develop skills in outlining, writing rough drafts, and completing a good final copy. He would, however, prefer a less structured program.

Literature

This year Devin is using School of Tomorrow Literature 7 PACEs. The PACEs are easily used independently, but do not contain literary analysis or in-depth study of the books.

Vocabulary

Devin used Working with Words 8 this year for vocabulary practice. This inexpensive workbook contained an excellent selection of practical vocabulary words.

Social Studies

This year Devin is studying Pennsylvania history. He is using Keystones 2 Pennsylvania history, a literature-based study.

Science

Devin is using School of Tomorrow Science PACEs this year. He enjoys the self-directed learning style of the PACEs, and has asked to continue using PACEs for biology next year.

Health

Devin completed the School of Tomorrow Health Elective PACEs this year. Although this course was intended to be used as a high school elective course, Devin completed all six PACEs without issue. He also received certification from the American Red Cross in first aid, adult CPR, child CPR, and infant CPR.

Physical Education

As part of his participation in the Civil Air Patrol, Devin spent many hours in physical training such as sit-ups, push-ups, and running. In addition, he continued to pursue fitness through his choice of individual activities.

    • Jillian, I highly recommend Math-U-See for students who are struggling with math. We just made the switch from Saxon to Math-U-See at the beginning of this school year, and we are definitely using it next year, as well. I’d love to hear if you decide to give MUS a try!
Thank you for your kind words about my site–I’m so glad you enjoy visiting!
